My wife had just finished reviewing and copy-editing my latest book, 49 Tips and Insights for Understanding Addiction, when she asked me, “Who is your target audience for this book?”
Without even giving her question one nanosecond of thought, I responded, “Everyone.”
Now, most marketing types, upon hearing my response, would have said, “That’s too broad. In order to reach any sales goals, you really need to be more specific.” But here’s the thing: I don’t care about marketing types, especially when it comes to this book. Really, my view of Addiction is that it impacts everyone and that the key barrier to successfully treating this wretched disease is a basic lack of understanding of its mechanics.
My hope is that if we can neutralize Addiction and reduce the shame and fear associated with it, then we can begin to see it as something that can be managed and treated. The problems arise when fear turns to anger, which then turns to hate. This hatred clouds treatment and actually serves as fuel within the shame – fear cycle that maintains an addiction.
So, no, I do not have a marketing plan that targets very specific audiences. I really do hope that many people read this book and attempt to learn from it. Even if people disagree with the Tips and Insights presented, at least there’s dialogue going on. This dialogue reduces the power that addiction holds and can lead to new areas and modes of addressing Addiction.
Now, I will be releasing questions for reflection that will serve as the basis for counselors, therapists, and social workers to obtain continuing education credits, but really, anyone can benefit from the book and from the reflective questions.
I’m releasing it as a Kindle eBook, at least initially, because of ease of market entry. In time, if it sells, then I’ll release it in paperback format. But, I think it’s the most important book I’ve written because I think it does address Addiction and substance abuse in such a way as to neutralize the negative emotions that come along with each.
49 Tips and Insights for Understanding Addiction will be available within the next few weeks (just waiting for the final cover design) and will list for $2.99 on Amazon. It’s a small price to pay for such a useful tool. Once I have the release date solidified, I’ll begin a countdown. But, in the meantime, if anyone has questions, please let me know: firstname.lastname@example.org. Also PLEASE SHARE THIS NEWS!
