A Simple Twist of the Wrist — a poem about what alcohol provides

alcoWom

a simple twist of the wrist

heaven opened in

that first simple twist of the wrist.

in pouring her first shot, she heard

salvation splash on salvation

she lifted the two ounce liquid hope

and let it enter her —

and it washed away her sins

like no church ever could

she found God at the bottom of the glass —

angels danced in her veins

as whiskey cleansed fear from

fallen dreams and

hope pulsed in alcohol-fueled songs

swirling and churning

a life she didn’t want

but lived through anyway –

she may never have love

she may never have faith

but she has a simple twist of the wrist

in which she’ll hide her very last breath.
