What is the purpose of jblea1016.com?
I started jblea1016.com as a way to provide information pertaining to substance abuse and, more importantly, recovery. Over time, I realized that life is a system and so much of what leads to substance abuse is all around us. I’ve also realized that the elements of health are also all around us.
Sometimes, I’ll post about substances that I’m actively studying. Substance abuse is almost always a symptom of a deeper problem and the ways substances work can reveal a lot about those who use them.
Other times, something in the tech field will catch my eye. Because I’ve designed and implemented more systems than I can count, I know quite a bit about tech management. Therefore, I write about topics in the field that interest me and that I think might interest others, as well.
A lot of times, I’ll write about local businesses or restaurants in which I’ve found value. I believe very much in an economically diverse local economy and when I find a local business of interest, I feel compelled to share it. I’ll also write quite a bit about local issues that affect my mood. I may be a smart-aleck about them, but it’s only because I love my hometown, Santa Fe, NM so much that when I see things that risk its soul, I have to say something.
Of course, I blog about me and my life and work. Mostly, though, jblea1016.com is my sounding board for things that I find good and strong and beautiful. I may anger some people through what i write and that’s ok. My blog is my therapy and my platform. When I started blogging, I wanted to change the world. I’ve learned that just being in the world and sharing its craziness and amazement is the best thing that I can do.

Hello Mr. Blea.,
I enjoyed your comments in Sun, SFNM. It was very interesting. The only question that came to mind was, Spaniards were Europeans/Anglos ? Why are they (S) seperated in to two groups?

Hi Linda. Well, genetically speaking, anglo-saxons were distinct from ibero-europeans. However, in NM, the distinctions between “Spanish” and “anglo-americans” are far more significant. The Americans enacted laws through which they were able to separate “spanish” families from “native” lands. Further, the Spanish who colonized this region were not only “Spanish,” they were also Jewish and Moorish. I don’t identify as spanish, i identify as a mestizo – a person of mixed blood and heritage. The goal of Americanization is cultural, linguistic, and religious homogeneity and i simply have no interest in being the same…..does that help?

Disappointing!
After reading your opinion piece in the New Mexican, out of curiosity went to your Blog. These kinds of self marketing and Blog promotion gimmicks are really prevalent on Social Media. The marketing guidebooks tell people to advertise their Blogs, by getting their opinions of letters to the Editor published. Unfortunately it was a safe watered down, “opinion” which left a lot of things unsaid. The New Mexican cultivates this sort of washed out safe rhetoric, that excludes the words Racism, or Fact.
This was just another feeble attempt to market your books, services or shameless self promotion. Using the Racism, debacle in order to market books on Addiction. Any thinking person can see how well that has been working. We really do not have access to the true numbers of Deaths of Despair here in Northern New Mexico, since numbers might contradict the effectiveness of the current programs, yours included. Well at least some people are making a good living out of appearing to “help.”
I am not sure if the overtly Racist commentary or the use of the New Mexican’s free advertising is more disturbing!
Sin Virguenza!

Mavis: I’m not exactly sure what to what you’re referring. My opinion piece was just that: my opinion about the Entrada and NM history. As far as my work is concerned, i’ve never charged anyone I’ve treated and while treatment may or may not work, the reality is that NM history does play a role in our current heroin problem whether you like it or not.

He said he lives in the area and deals with a lot of addiction there. Is it a fact that there is a lot of heroin addiction there? Sounds like you’re fishing here. Good try though.

Your post in the SF New Mexican was right on point. You characterized the history of oppression in NM quite accurately. Thank you for your insight.
