In a stunning turn of events, the Juan Blea for School Board campaign has received an unexpected show of support (or at least creative reuse) from members of the local homeless community. Late last week, a campaign sign for Juan Blea was spotted rolling down a city sidewalk in the front basket of a shopping cart.
While some might call it theft, Blea’s campaign is calling it momentum.
“We’re proud to see our message literally on the move,” Blea said in a statement. “Most campaigns spend thousands chasing endorsements that don’t actually mean anything. We didn’t even have to ask for this one, it just happened organically.”
Witnesses report that the sign appeared in good condition, clearly visible, and possibly better circulated than most yard signs. “Honestly, it’s the most mobile campaign material we’ve got,” a volunteer added. “Some try grassroots campaigning, this is really asphalt-level engagement.”
The campaign emphasized that the sighting represents more than just a sign in a cart. “It’s a metaphor,” said Blea. “Politics these days is all about appearances and endorsement. Meanwhile, real life is happening right on the street. Maybe my sign found the most honest place to be.”
Blea concluded by noting that, while traditional endorsements often come from “people who’ve never even met you,” this one at least has character.
“Some politicians have corporate PACs behind them,” he said. “I’ve got a couple of carts and hope.”
The campaign declined to comment on whether future signs would be distributed directly via sidewalk outreach, though sources close to Blea suggested “anything’s possible at this point.”
