It’s hard to ask for money, yet i need raise funds. Fundraising isn’t easy. Heck, when I first started out in life, I actually kind of felt guilty on payday. It was weird to me that I could trade my time and effort for money. Obviously, I got used to the idea. Working for money became the norm and voila — I grew in skills and earned more as I did.

Then I wrote a book. Writing my first book, Under the Same Sky, was fun. Writing to me, is fun. Crafting a large work like a novel or nonfiction book is also fun. But selling books was not easy. It still isn’t easy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t think of myself as a salesman.

Which is why campaign fundraising is a trippy endeavor for me. Under the best of circumstances, I trade skills and effort for money and accept that as reality. But asking people to support my campaign is weird and difficult. The reason why is because I am not exchanging anything for the funds. I don’t want any PAC money, as I’m sure PACs will want something in exchange, whether it be a vote or support. It’s hard to accept funds from private businesses, as I work with so many companies that I don’t want any blurring of lines.

However, raising awareness of my School Board campaign won’t happen magically. I can’t wiggle my nose and have signs and flyers appear. I want people to associate “Juan Blea” with something good for our schools and for our greater Santa Fe community. In order to do that, I need to get my name in front of voters. Which requires money as stuff is expensive these days.

So, my hopes are that people who believe that I will serve Santa Fe voters as objectively and faithfully as possible will donate to my campaign. Ultimately, winning appears to be a long shot, but I believe that I will convince folks that my aim is to serve and implement policy that works for people. Not ideology. Not special interests.
