On August 13th, I hosted my first campaign event. Without any doubt, it was an overwhelming success. Not only was it well-attended, but the attendees presented a diverse range of beliefs and interests. To me, for one night and in that little space, Santa Fe was a community that respects each other and finds common ground.
Ultimately, finding both common ground mutual and mutual respect is the foundation of success for any group. At my event, people discussed their concerns, not only about the schools, but also about Santa Fe as a whole. While the range of people was broad, the concerns were similar and it was clear to me that we all have more in common that what may seem at the surface.
Over the last eight (8) local elections, Santa Fe votes in dwindling numbers. Apathy reigns these days and while people are concerned about Santa Fe’s current and future states, we as a community are simply not voting. We need to come together, just like we did for my “meet and greet” and blow up voter apathy.
Twenty percent (20%) turnout should not determine our community’s leadership. Only when varyings beliefs, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds vote does a society actually pick a representative.
I believe that I am that representative, but in order to represent, we need to vote. This upcoming election, to me, is about Santa Fe’s direction and purpose. What do we want for our students? What do we want for our schools? Really, what do we want for our community? In my opinion, coming together through respect and purpose will lead to a city that is strong and resilient. We don’t have to agree, but we should respect each other’s perspective. WE can’t move forward and learn unless we see good in someone else, even if they are different.
For one night, Santa Fe was the community in which I believe. I am weary of the fighting and the hate. We need to participate in this election and find ways to heal what I believe is a hurting community. I appreciate, very much, this opportunity to serve the school district and my beloved Santa Fe. Thank you to all for proving to me that Santa Fe can, in fact, come together. My campaign isn’t about ME. It’s about WE..
