If there’s no food left anywhere, I’m moving into Flying Tortilla in Santa Fe, NM. It’s one of my go-to places as it is, but the way it’s responding to the current crisis is nothing short of brilliant and I hope that all establishments follow Flying Tortilla’s lead.
First off, their staff made it clear that diners’ safety was their primary concern. The tables were cleared of anything that anybody could touch and I watched as their staff efficiently disinfected the tables once patrons departed. They’ve replaced their standard, plastic-laminated menus with disposable, paper versions. In asking our waiter, Javier, about the change, he said that they print new ones every day and toss used ones. Furthermore, they’ve switched to covered, plastic tableware and are providing sealed hand wipes for all diners.
Even before I ordered, I felt safe. Here was a restaurant doing its part to keep our community safe during this crazy time. I was comfortable and didn’t feel guilty for being out and about. I’m not good at being caged; I get cabin fever (ADHD anyone) and to sit still all day is next to impossible for me. Therefore, because Flying Tortilla made me feel safe and comfortable, I was able to enjoy my grub.
And boy, did I enjoy it! Although they’ve adjusted in many ways, the quality of their food hasn’t sifted even a little. My favorite breakfast dish at FT is the corned beef and eggs and it never disappoints. The meat is succulent and tender – so mush so that even with a plastic fork, the corned beef fell apart at the slightest touch. Its velvety richness was a nice offset to the sting of the hot green chile. Surrounded by my over medium eggs and a batch of flavorful potatoes, I was celebrating that I could enjoy a meal wihtout feeling guilty of endangering my great city.
I commend and recommend Flying Tortilla. This always great establishment has taken customer service to a whole new level and I will never forget my experience in a crisis.
