I had the privilege of attending a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new cannabis business located deep within Santa Fe’s south-side. Green Fuego is both a cannabis micro-producer and a dispensary. It seeks to be the premier boutique cannabis business in the industry. Without a doubt, the energy at the ceremony proves that they are well on their way to achieving their objective.
The Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event and both Brian Gutierrez (former planning commissioner and District 1 council candidate) and Councilor Lee Garcia (Santa Fe city councilor for District 3) attended the ceremony. What’s most striking about their attendance, is that neither supported recreational cannabis legalization, yet they came with open minds. They toured the facility and asked intelligent questions and I believe that they both left the business with an appreciation for this emerging business.
During the event, Green Fuego owners Caryn Fiorina, Eric Trujillo, and Chanet Fiorina-Trujillo were on hand to answer questions. They both provided insight into their operation and discussed their guiding business philosophy. While they do seek to become the best cannabis operation in the state, they seek to do so from a health perspective. Eric Trujillo (who doubles as Green Fuego’s Master Grower) struggled with ADHD and uses cannabis to manage his symptoms. As a team, Green Fuego believes that their cannabis is the best medicine for a variety of ailments and the industry agrees: Green Fuego won Best Sativa at the recent Essie Awards.
I think Green Fuego is the exact type of business that Santa Fe’s beleaguered south-side needs. Green Fuego represents the type of business that the Cannabis Regulation Act (CRA) sought to create. The CRA targeted women and minorities and Green Fuego is the model CRA business. While the original 32 producers still dominate the cannabis industry in New Mexico, Green Fuego represents the potential to disrupt the industry power structure and establish a strong foothold in the the industry. And Santa Fe needs this new industry: without economic infrastructure, Santa Fe will die, as we have lost our community soul and can longer count on tourists to save or economy.
While I don’t use cannabis, I think its benefits far outweigh its potential risks. I strongly support Green Fuego’s business mission and am honored to have attended its ribbon-cutting ceremony. My hat goes off the the Green Fuego team. Eric Trujillo never ceases to amaze me with his in-depth cannabis knowledge. Green Fuego energy is nothing short of infectious and hopeful.
